AFA CyberPatriot

Kids working on Cyber Patroit.

AFA logoCivil Air Patrol has been patrolling our nation's coastal borders since its inception.  Today, the coastlines are borderless with the onset of cyber vulnerability and attacks.  Thus, CAP is participating in a timely technological initiative, sponsored by the Air Force Association, to educate the next generation of patriotic cyber defenders of our nation's security and infrastructure.  CyberPatriot is a cutting-edge activity, where high school sutdents, to include CAP and JROTC cadets, defend a computer network against a virtual cyber attack.

We need YOUR help in encouraging high school teams to participate in the 2012 competition, CyberPatriot IV.  Please see letter of support from CAP's newly-elected national commander,           Maj Gen Charles L. Carr, Jr.  Also, please consider being a coach or mentor to a group of up to five young people. The rewards far outweigh the work involved, as noted in the Letter to My Team from the 2011 winning CAP volunteer mentor.

CAP TEAM WAS TOPS IN 2011 CYBERPATRIOT PROGRAM!

The Air Force Association held its first-ever CyberFutures Symposium in National Harbor, MD in April 2011. At the event, the over 660 original participants were pared to the top 100 high school students who competed in the final rounds of the AFA’s unique and ambitious National High School CyberPatriot III competition. The students included regular high school students in the Open Division, as well as an All Service Division that included JROTC and CAP cadets. All competitors were energetic, focused, and on the top of their game as they defended computer networks from intruders and fixed security "holes" in front of spectators and fans.

AFA’s CyberPatriot Founding Partners, SAIC (Science Applications International Corporation) and the University of Texas, San Antonio, joined the program’s Presenting Sponsor, Northrop Grumman, in providing this opportunity for tech savvy high school students.  Northrop Grumman generously presented prizes and scholarships to the winning team members.

Congratulations to the 2011 All Service Division champion, the Civil Air Patrol's Florida Wing Cadet Team (Team-Wilson) and to the Open Division champion, Red Bank Regional High School in Little Silver, New Jersey. The AFA’s press release and CAP's press release announce these winners.  Special congratulations to the CAP team for earning placement as the overall top scorer!

This highly-competitive and highly-technological event is training a new generation to ensure America is prepared to defend its national security from the air, land, water, and cyber space. In its fourth year, the competition is already energized for the 2012 competition!  The Open Division registration fee of $350 can be paid by the school or by soliciting support from local industry or organizations, such as AFA Chapters around the country. (Click here to find an AFA chapter near you.) We especially encourage All Service Division JROTC and CAP cadets to form teams for registration, as their registration fee is absorbed by their parent organizations.

CyberPatriot is poised to become a great annual cadet event and all cadet units are encouraged to participate in the program each year.  To begin preparations, go to www.uscyberpatriot.org for detailed information.
Do YOU have the right stuff to compete?

CyberPatriot Team

I had a wonderful experience watching 5 CAP Cadets from Cadet Sq 107 compete in the final elimination round of Cyber Patriot II. The Cadets were very motivated and had their 3 competing workstations on fire as they collectively "battled" against intrusions... it turns out they had the top score, closing about 88% of the intrusions, and will be one the 8 final teams competing in Orlando. The 5 cadets are fired up and are excited about the next step of the competition! I also had a chance to talk to them and their families about their futures – all are interested in pursuing degrees, scholarships, USAFA appointments, etc., to have a role in cyberspace in some form in the future!
